Health ManagementにIを！

救命救急の医師から東日本大震災の復興支援を経て、働く世代の方々の健康を支援したい、個人だけでなく組織全体の健康づくりに貢献したい、という強い想いを抱くようになり、産業医の道に進みました。その後、日本各地の様々な企業様を支援させていただく機会に恵まれ、また様々な出会いがあって、医師であるとともに、人や組織の健康と幸福の支援者として、研鑽を積むことができました。再び大きな転機となったのは、2016年に起きた熊本地震です。子供のころから見てきた熊本城が崩壊したのはさすがに精神的にショックでしたし、同時に長く離れていた郷土の復興に少しでも役立ちたいとの気持ちが強く芽生えました。そうして始めたのが、「産業保健で企業を元気にしたい！」のVisionのもとに立ち上げた「くまもと産業医サービス」です。地域の産業保健が充実すれば、働く方々の健康を確保でき、通院や医療費の負担を抑えることができます。また企業側にとっては、長期の労働力の確保や技術継承がしやすくなります。働く方々の身体機能が増進し、安全で快適な職場環境が準備できれば、労働災害の発生も減ります。人と仕事の良好な適合ができれば、生産性は向上し、選ばれる職場が生まれ、結果として企業と地域の発展にも繋がります。これまでの様々な知識と経験から、私たちにはこのムーブメントの一助になれる強い想いと自信がありました。そして何よりも、ここでも様々な方々との出会いと、何事にも代えがたい多くの助けを得られたおかげで、今こうして、熊本の地で、産業保健の専門機関として、多くの企業様や自治体様を支援する機会を頂戴できております。ご支援いただきました皆様には深く深くお礼申し上げます。

私たちは、産業医サービスから始まり、豪雨やコロナ禍を含めた様々な災害を乗り越える中で、より一層、皆様への健康支援の必要性を感じて、産業の場に限らず、地域や社会に対しても働きかけられる存在になるべく歩を進めることにしました。
今、私たちが最も大切にしている言葉は「Health ManagementにIを！」です。

この「I」には様々な意味と願いを込めています。英語で「私」とした場合は、「健康管理の中に自分を入れる⇒主体的な健康管理の促進」になりますし、日本語の音で「あい」とした場合は、「健康管理に愛情を込める」になります。英語の頭文字としては、「Integration：健康管理は生活の様々な側面が互いに影響することを考慮して統合的なアプローチを実践する」、「Individuality：個性を尊重し一人一人に即した健康管理をサポートする」、「Innovation：最新の科学的根拠に基づいた健康管理を行う」、「Interaction：相互理解とコミュニケーションを大切にした健康管理」といった意味にもなります。健康管理にはいつも決まった正解があるわけではなく、その時その状況によって一番大事なことは変わります。そんな変化にも柔軟に対応できるように、その人やそのコミュニティにとって最も大切なIを一緒にデザインしていきたい！それが今の私たちの強い想いです。
これからも私たちは、皆様が元気で、健康で、幸せな人生を歩めるためのお手伝いをしていきます。

My career began as an emergency physician, and through my experience supporting recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake, I developed a strong desire to support the health of working people. I came to believe that occupational health is not only about caring for individuals but also about promoting the well-being of entire organizations, and this conviction led me to pursue the path of occupational medicine.

Since then, I have had the privilege of supporting many companies across Japan. Through these opportunities and encounters, I have grown not only as a physician but also as a partner dedicated to the health and happiness of both people and organizations.

Another major turning point came with the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016. Witnessing the collapse of Kumamoto Castle, a symbol I had seen since childhood, was deeply shocking. At the same time, it sparked a strong determination to contribute, even in a small way, to the recovery of my hometown. From this experience, I founded “Kumamoto Occupational Health Services” under the vision of “Revitalizing companies through occupational health.”

When occupational health is enhanced in the workplace, employees can maintain their well-being, reducing the burden of hospital visits and medical expenses. For companies, this ensures a stable workforce and smoother transfer of skills across generations. Improved physical functioning and safer, more comfortable work environments help prevent occupational accidents. Better alignment between people and their work leads to higher productivity, creates workplaces that attract talent, and ultimately contributes to the growth of both companies and communities. Based on our knowledge and experience, we have had the confidence and determination to be part of this movement. Most importantly, with the invaluable support and encouragement of many people, we have been able to establish ourselves here in Kumamoto as a specialized institution in occupational health, working alongside numerous companies and municipalities. To all who have supported us, I extend my deepest gratitude.

From our beginnings as an occupational health service, we have overcome many challenges including natural disasters such as heavy rains and the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences have strengthened our recognition of the importance of health support, and we are now taking steps to extend our efforts beyond workplaces to the broader community and society.

Today, the phrase we value most is: “Put the ‘I’ in Health Management.”

This “I” carries many meanings. In English, “I” as the self represents the idea of encouraging individuals to take ownership of their health. In Japanese, the sound ai conveys love and compassion—“health management with love.” As an acronym, “I” also represents:
• Integration: adopting a holistic approach that considers the interconnections among all aspects of life.
• Individuality: respecting uniqueness and supporting personalized health management.
• Innovation: practicing health management based on the latest scientific evidence.
• Interaction: emphasizing communication and mutual understanding.

Health management has no single fixed answer; what matters most changes with time and circumstances. Our aspiration is to work together to design the “I” that is most meaningful for each person and each community.

We will continue striving to help people live energetic, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
